Confusion is a recognized sign of severe dehydration and deserves particular attention in older adults.
Sudden confusion should always be taken seriously because infections, stroke, low blood sugar, medication problems, and other emergencies can cause similar symptoms.

When you do not drink enough, they conserve water by producing less urine and making it more concentrated.
Repeated or prolonged dehydration can contribute to urinary and kidney problems. Mayo Clinic lists urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and even kidney failure among possible complications of significant or repeated dehydration.
This does not mean missing a few glasses of water will suddenly damage your kidneys. The concern is persistent or severe fluid loss.
